Sarah's Origami website

"l33t foldiningz"

Saturday - March 14, 2009

[Piro] - 14:17:25 - [link here]

Tuesday the 17th is St. Patricks day, so its the perfect time to try your hands at some l33t Folding. Seraphim has put forth somewhat of a challenge for those of you who are not severely limited in the three-dimensional folding bending and crazy magick'ing of paper (like me). A number of years ago, she developed a model for a Shamrock which she's shared with us on her Sarah's Origami website. A few weeks ago, she drew up some diagrams on how to fold them.

If you manage to fold one, she'd love to see a picture of your finished model. If you have trouble getting it to work, you can (like me) ask her for help. Unlike me, you can't actually have her come over and do most of it for you, but you will probably have a lot less trouble with it than i did. ^^;; Sarah now has twitter you can follow, Sarahgami. Good place to prod her if you are having trouble folding it. :)

In other news for this week, we are moving our warehouse to a new location, and this is the week when most of the moving work (including moving the shirt printer) is going to happen. We've working on this move the the past few weeks, hopefully things will go smoothly and we can be back up and running by the beginning of next week.

"Wikipedia'd"

Friday - March 13, 2009

[Piro] - 01:08:20 - [link here]

Sometime last year I remember hearing a story on NPR by a writer at Slate who was feeling a tad hurt that the Wikipedia entry on him had been marked for deletion. As i listened to his very amusing thoughts on feeling "like a dead tree marked with orange spray paint for the city arborist to uproot," i couldn't help but think, "try being an old tree on a playground with half the bark stripped off, covered with carved initials and pruning paint."

I chuckled grimly to myself, then thought about it. Having established Wikipedia entries about yourself and your work is not something most people can claim, and i shouldn't knock it. They don't exist because officials from this shadowy 'Wikipedia' entity decided they should, they exist because a community of people have gone to a lot of trouble to create and maintain them. A community of people who have moderated numerous changes and updates, reasonably and fairly dealt with detractors and their opinions, and handled outright vandalism with measured reason. They are good articles, and should not be included in my normal self deprecating thought stream.

That said, i guess i don't have to worry too much about them being marked for deletion, at least not for a week or so. The article on Megatokyo is todays Featured Article on the Wikipedia Main Page.

This is quite an honor, and i feel rather humbled by it. Yet this recognition by the Wikipedia community is not about me or Megatokyo, but, and i shall quote: "Megatokyo is a featured article; it (or a previous version of it) has been identified as one of the best articles produced by the Wikipedia community." That's some pretty serious props to the folks that made and maintained the article all these years. Seriously, congrats.

I myself have never personally added or changed anything on Wikipedia, at least not before today. I was asked if there was some way i could provide them with an image released under Creative Commons that could be used in the article. This was mainly so there could be an image included with the front page listing. This is not something that is easy to do when dealing with characters in copyrighted and trademarked material. After thinking about it i thought that a simple crowd scene, full of the kinds of people you might see in "megatokyo", but not necessarily megatokyo characters might work, so here is what i did for it. There is also a full size 600 DPI version available as well.

It's my way of saying thank you to the Wikipedia MT community. Just my little contribution and thanks.

If you have somehow found yourself here via the links from Wikipedia... welcome. :) If the current comic seems a little confusing, it... er... well, you could just start from the begining, or check out ray's recent blog which is full of links and information about Megatokyo or just pick some random spot and start reading... uh... Either way, i hope you find it amusing, and or entertaining. There's a lot to read.

"Streak Broken"

Tuesday - March 10, 2009

[Dom] - 14:14:26 - [link here]

Yes, I know that I broke my new year's resolution - but I actually got complaints that there were too many rants and not enough comic, so I decided to take a break. So, whoever took "two months" as the pool for how long it'd take for me to stop ranting, you guys win.

As for what I've been doing?  Well, I spent last week sicker than I've been in years, which was in turn accompanied by more sleep than I've gotten in months.  I also had a job interview I'm hopeful about, and if I get the job it'll definitely lead to some fun stories (at least, it will if I can tell them without violating an NDA).

The rest of my activities you can find contained in the S-Words Podcast, where we've done two Stuff segments and two segments on movies - one a terrible video game adaptation that we panned in every way, and the other a comic adaptation that missed some of the point, but did pretty well considering the circumstances.

see you later this week, I swear!
