"Hatch and Replace"

Tuesday - January 21, 2014

[Piro] - 16:13:07 - [link here]

One thing you may have noticed if you have read Megatokyo both online and in the dead tree versions is that there are quite a number of comics in the archive here that appear to be unfinished but show up in Megatokyo Volume 6 in finished, fully hatched and rendered form. Most of these were from the first year of having a new baby in the house and just getting a comic posted was a major feat, but i DID have to finish them for the book. As with many things on this site (coughcharachterpagecough) The one thing i never did was go back and update the web-versions of these comics with the finished, fully hatched versions.

Of course, struggling as i do with getting new comics done it's been hard to justify taking the time to grind through and process all of these, but thanks to the effort of Jon "Hoolibas", who devoted many long evenings to grinding through the list of comics to be processed, the task is now done... though Jon actually finished the task months ago, I JUST now got to going through and updating all the comics in question, so finally you can appreciate Jon's efforts. Thanks Jon :)

Of course, this big update is kinda hard to see unless you are taking a pass through the archives and reading chapter 9 and 10, but trust me there were a lot of them. In fact, if you are that curious, here is a list, complete with links to the revised comics:

[1062], [1081], [1089], [1091], [1092], [1093], [1094], [1095], [1096], [1097], [1099], [1100], [1107], [1108], [1110], [1111], [1112], [1113], [1114], [1115], [1116], [1117], [1118], [1119], [1125], [1148], [1149], [1150], [1152], [1153], [1154], [1157], [1159], [1162], [1165], [1170], [1171], [1172], [1175], [1180], [1181], [1182], [1183], [1185], [1188], [1191], [1195], [1200], [1201], [1202], [1203], [1204], [1205], [1206], [1207], [1208], [1209], [1225], [1226]

Please note - you might have to refresh your browser to get the revised version (especially if you have visited any of these pages recently). There ARE a few more comics in chapter 11 that i need to get hatched and updated - six of them, i believe. As i get the comic itself back up to speed here i'm going to see about getting those done.

It's just kinda nice to finally have the Megatokyo archives up to snuff for the first time in, um, well, ever. :P

As for other stuff - the Megatokyo Visual Novel project is one hella lot of work. I knew this, of course, but it's chugging along. I lost a lot more time than i thought i would finishing up the material for the Omnibus collection, but that is now all behind me and done. It's odd thinking in such cinematic terms, but it's starting to shape up well - just a ton more work ahead to get 'er done.

Another comic in the works for this week, got some momentum on this chapter point and well, this latest comic got things moving along with a bit of a jump. I'll save the apologies blah blah blah and just get back to work on that comic thing i seem to remember i am supposed to be doing.

Oh come on! People have to LOOK at that now!

"Hobgoblins"

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds". Though it is apparently left to the reader to decide what counts as foolish or not foolish. If you web search something along the lines of "pictures to drive OCD crazy" you'll find some pages like this one with various photographs of things that are not quite right. It's interesting that some don't bother me at all, especially the ones that you can tell were set up deliberately to provoke the effect. One of the common themes is manhole covers that intersect painted street lines, and were put back in the wrong direction. I often try to fix stuff like that, time permitting and when practical. An actual manhole cover I'd have to go fetch a crowbar to really do anything. Another common theme is patterns on tile floors, with a mere two tiles switched from where they should be. Those photos trigger my "Y U NO" face because it's too late to do anything about it, and it's always going to be like that.

So I've got this proofreading/nitpick list I made up for the upcoming MegaTokyo omnibus, collecting the original volumes 1 to 3, coming out this spring or so from Dark Horse. It would print out to about 50 pages and is filled with stuff like this. It's impressive in that "I'm going to back away slowly now" sort of way. A lot of the dialogue Fred has written over the years has certain elements with two ways of going about it that are arguably equally valid. The problem is Fred tends to pick one of the two approaches at random each time he encounters the situation, and by "problem" I mean things that few people would ever notice and even fewer would be bothered by. Oh, yes, there's a good number of genuine grammatical errors to be fixed, missing punctuation and the like, some continuity snarls to iron out, a handful of art mistakes to adjust, and a few weird errors that were introduced in the original print editions somehow, but mostly I'm skittering around, trying to realign manhole covers before they become tile floors, like some kind of madman. I'm not sure how much of it will even make it through to the final print version, but at least I made the effort.

As the old saying goes, you don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps. Though perhaps we actually DO have to be crazy to work here. That would explain a few things. Hobgoblins, indeed.
